Voting is taking place in a single phase for all 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. Over 57.3 million voters in the state will decide the political future of 4,023 candidates.
The main contest is between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Chief Minister MK Stalin has promised to make the state a role model for South Asia, while AIADMK chief EK Palaniswami has appealed to voters, especially the youth, to vote wisely.
The active participation of actor Vijay in this election has made the contest triangular in several seats. His entry into the fray could impact the equations of both major alliances. Overall, today's voting is considered to be a turning point in the political course of both states. Now it remains to be seen whether Mamata Banerjee in Bengal and MK Stalin in Tamil Nadu can retain their respective strongholds.
